The Benefits of Baby Wearing.

There are many benefits to using slings - from transportation, to bonding and increased responsiveness to baby’s needs.

Research has shown that holding baby close in a sling can promote social and emotional development, as well as speech.

For parents, positive benefits include improved mental health, lower stress levels and the promotion of breastfeeding.

Using a baby carrier is also an opportunity for partners and other carers to be more involved, to be close to and nurture their babies.

It is important to remember, however, that baby wearing is hard work and carers should be reminded to listen to their bodies, bearing in mind limitations, especially if still in recovery from a c-section, which, in some cases, can take several months.

I would always remind parents of the risks involved in using slings and to practice safe sling wearing. Visit the NCT website, www.nct.org.uk, for more information, including the UK Sling Consortium’s TICKS Checklist:

T (Tight).

I (In view always).

C (Close enough to kiss).

K (Keep chin off chest).

S (Supported back).
