Tummy time is beneficial for a number of reasons, from the healthy development of fine and gross motor skills, to the prevention of plagiocephaly or ‘flat head syndrome’.
Tummy time also counts towards daily recommended physical activity, which for babies under 1 year is approximately 30 minutes, spread across the day.
In terms of sleep, tummy time is considered one of the essential elements which make up healthy sleep hygiene, the foundation of good, restorative sleep.
Tummy time can be completed on the floor or across your lap. If your little one struggles to enjoy tummy time, which is very normal, start with just a couple of minutes at a time and gradually build up to slightly longer stretches. Sing to your baby, dance, clap - whatever it takes to keep them happy!
Tummy time should ALWAYS be supervised and if your little one falls asleep, move them to a safe sleep space, on their back.
Remember, TUMMY TO PLAY, BACK TO SLEEP!
